Our Russian Ancestors

Here I have noted our Russian Ancestors from Richard de Clare to Our Terrells.  Let me know if you have any questions.  Enjoy!

The Russian Nobility (Duke Rurik of Novgorod to Anne of Kiev) to Richard de Clare, Magna Charta Surety - Ref: Hallu, Roger, "Anne of Kiev, Queen of France", (in French and Russian) located in the Pittsburgh Carnegie Public Library, Main Branch.

• 1. Rurik of Novgorod, Grand Duke of Kiev, ruled during the period 862-879. He died in 879. He was succeeded by his nephew, Oleg. Oleg was, like Rurik, a semi-legendary personage, who freed the Eastern Slavs from the rule of the Khazars, a powerful Turkic stock, and he concluded a treaty with the Byzantine Empire. He ruled during the period 879-912, when he was succeeded by Rurik's son, Igor. Rurik was probably a Danish Viking.

• 2. Igor, son of Rurik of Novgord, ruled as Grand Duke of Kiev from 912 to 945. He was born in 875 and married St. Olga. She was born about 890 in Russia. In 945 Igor was assassinated for exhorting large sums from his subjects to pay for his campaigns against the Byzantines. Olga became regent of the grand principality of Kiev, in the period 945 to 955, until her son reached majority. She hunted down Igor's murderers and had them scalded to death. In about 955 to 957 she became an Orthodox Christian and shortly afterwards ushered in the new era in Byzantine-Kievian relations by visiting Constantinople. There she was baptized, or rebaptized, taking as her Christian name, "Helena", in honor of the Byzantine empress. It was through her efforts and those of her grandson Vladimir that Christianity was brought to Russia. She was canonized by the Orthodox Church. Her feast day is July 11. She died in 969. Igor died in 945.

• 3. Sviatoslav, son of Igor and St. Olga, Grand Duke of Kiev, was born in 936 and died in 972, ruling during the period of 972-977. He married Maloucha, a servant of the Queen Olga, daughter of Malko I. Yaropolk, son of Sviatoslav and an unknown woman, ruled during the period 972-977. He was succeeded by his half-brother, Vladimir.

• 4. Vladimir I. (St. Vladimir) The Great, a third son of Sviatoslav, was Grand Duke of Kiev in the period 977-1015. He was born about 956 and died in 1015.

He married (1) Olova, by whom there was the first son, Vicheslav, Prince of Novgorod, born in 977, died in 1010.

He married in 979 (2) Rogneda, daughter of Prince Rogvolode (Rognald) of Polotsk. From this marriage there the following children:

o 1. Isiaslav, Prince of Polotsk, was the second son, died in 1044.

o 2. Yaroslav (Jaroslav) I He was the fourth son. See below.

o 3. Vsevolod, the fifth son, Prince of Doulebes, married Sigrid Storraade.

He had a son by a Greek woman:

? 1. Sviatopolk I., Prince of Tourov (988-1015), Prince of Kiev (1015-19), was the third son of Vladimir I., married _________, daughter of Boleslav of Pologne.

He had a sixth son, Sviatoslav, Prince of Drevlianes, died in 1015, by Malfrida, a Czech woman.

He had two sons, Mstislav, Prince of Tmoutarakan, the seventh son, died in 1036, and Stanislav, Prince of Smolensk, the seventh son, by d'Adele, a Czech woman.

He had a ninth son, Soudislav, Prince of Pskov, imprisoned in 1036, released in 1058, died in 1063, by _____, a Czech woman. He died in 1063.

He had a tenth child by ______, named Pozvizd.

He married in 989, Anne of Byzantia. From this marriage there were two sons as follows:

? 1. Boris, Prince of Rostov, child no. 11., died in 1015, married a princess from Bohemia.

? 2. Gleb, Prince of Mourom, child no. 12., died in 1015.

Vladimir I. is also reported to have had the following daughters: the first, unnamed, married Bernard of Norway; the second, Premislava, married Ladislas le Chauve, cousin of St. Etienne and father of Andre (Andrew) I. of Hungary; the third, Marie Dobrogneva.

Vladimir I. is reported in some sources as the first Czar of Russia, though that name was not used officially until the 16th Century. He was canonized on the basis of converting Russia to the Christian religion. He was succeeded by his son, Sviatopolk I., during the period 1015-1019, after which time another son, Yaroslav (Jaroslav) succeeded him.

• 5. Yaroslav (Jaroslav - whose seal the TRYZUB you see above -  was Grand Duke of Kiev from 1019 to 1054, the fourth son of Vladimir I. He was baptized in 988, and died in February 20, 1054. The last son had in turn a son, Magnus III., King of Norway and a grandson, Sigurd I., King of Norway. Elizabeth married in 1067, (2) Sven II., King of Denmark. They had sons Olaf III., King of Denmark, and Eric III., King of Denmark.

o 3. Isiaslav I., Grand Prince of Kiev (1054-1073), born in 1024, died October 3, 1078, married about 1043, Gertrude, who died January 4, 1107, daughter of Mieszco II. Lambert, King of Poland, 1025-1034. They had a son, Sviatopolk II (Michael), Grand Prince of Kiev, born 1050, died April 16, 1113

Kiev is the Capital of the Ukraine in Russia.  Anne (above) was a Princess of Kiev who married the King of France and inso doing brought the lineage of the Russian nobility into the Terrell family.  Other famous Russian ancestors are St. Olga - you can read more about her below.

4510421378.jpg

The Tryzub (pronounced "treh-zoob") is the ubiquitous symbol of Ukraine. The ancient symbol is believed to have originated as a tribal symbol; today it is emblazoned on the country's flag, on postage, money, business logos, even Easter eggs! The highly stylized version seen almost everywhere in Ukraine originated as the family crest of Volodymyr, a tenth century Ukrainian Prince.

Today, the tryzub is worn as a symbol of national pride, as a symbol of the Chritian trinity, or as a synthesis of the divine elements of fire and water in the manifest world
